Project  Hiedanranta Master Plan
Client Tampere City
Location Tampere, Finland
Size
1,500,000 m2
Year 2020
Status Master Plan Adopted June 2020
Hiedanranta is a new smart sustainable district covering 246 hectares west of the City of Tampere, Finland. The district will accommodate 21,000 inhabitants in 1,500,000 m2 of buildings and provide 8,000 new jobs.  The innovative district provides a platform for intelligent urban development, experimentation, and resource efficiency through the circular economy.
Hiedanranta is a beacon of sustainability in urban design. The district is designed to produce more energy than it consumes and will be a carbon sink. Hiedanranta renewable urban energy systems will act as an exemplar at the national and international levels.
The Hiedanranta district is divided into three neighborhoods: Lielahti, City Centre, and Lake City, all connected by a new sustainable tram. At City Centre, inspiration has been taken from the retained historical factory to create a new, sustainable, walkable city center with well-integrated public transport.  In Lielahti, the existing shops have been incorporated into a vibrant commercial and residential neighborhood. Lake City provides a unique living experience, with public squares and central canal placed along the island edge.

The Circular City Blocks/NorthBank project has received a prestigious Green GOOD DESIGN® Award, 2020 for Green Urban Planning/Landscape Architecture, as awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

The Circular City Blocks/NorthBank concept explores three options for a circular economy block. Three proposals were developed in collaboration with Cireco Finland and Evolving Symbiotic Cities (ESC). The proposals demonstrate a sustainable future in which architecture, infrastructure, and urban design come together to create an efficient city block that reduces energy and resource consumption and promotes social cohesion. All proposals feature buildings built for disassembly, flexible construction, innovative modular and recyclable materials, and commonality of functions that blurs the lines between public and private uses. An innovative approach to 24-hour economy, and system architecture improves the efficiency of spaces and energy consumption, ensuring the long-term sustainability and financial viability of the proposal.
